Better Late than Never!

Well, winter finally came in a big way last week. Everyone got blasted in the Mid-Atlantic, but our firends in VA, DC, and Baltimore got the brunt of it, I think. We had between 30-40″ of the light fluffy stuff here and the County and State Roads Dept kept everything clear for us, as they always do. Seems like it’s all or nothing with this weather any more!

Lift 2-3 Squirrel Cage 2

May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall, and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest never rise !

It’s snowing!! We had a mini blizzard this morning and have about 2″ on the ground here in McHenry. The Wisp is finally able to make some decent quality snow and the guns are pumping it out all over North Camp and the original slopes – Face, Squirrel, Wisp Trail, Roadrunner, and Possum. I just can’t remember such a slow start to the ski season. Wisp should be up and running with some chairlifts by Thursday ….full progress report here

Deep Creek Drive is beginning to look like a cozy mountain resort village again. Gotta love this scene 🙂

I had some perfect holiday time with my daughters, Erin and Devon… back home from California.

They both love to cook and we made a full blown Christmas turkey dinner with the help and recipe from Rebecca, their Mom. We roasted the bird breast down in a bed of onions, carrots, celery, apples, and Sauvignon Blanc. After an hour, we turned it upright and let ‘er go. It was so moist from the steaming of the vegetables and wine. I’m an old traditionalist when it comes to turkey cooking, but I must say…this is a great recipe. Rebecca found it in the Splendid Table recipes as a brined preparation, but we decided to forego that step. Shoot me an email and I’ll send you the recipe. Devon got inspired and put together a fantastic Stuffed Pork Loin one night that came out of the McClive’s Restaurant recipe box. She butterflied a tenderloin & stuffed with apples. ground pork, crumbled cornbread, then roasted it with rosemary, thyme, and apple cider. The finishing sauce were the pan juices deglazed with apple brandy and touched up with a bit of beef demiglace. What a feast :} Well, I guess you can see where my focus has been over the last few weeks. I hope you had a lot of holiday fun with your loved ones also.

Check out the Chamber Web Site for January events and hop in the car, take a road trip up here to Deep Creek Lake and enjoy a bit of winter wonderland.

Tis the Season !

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Maybe you took advantage of some of the ‘Black Friday – Cyber Monday’ “deals” out there? Seems like the sellers raise prices in early November, only to discount them on the big Thanksgiving sale days ! Maybe it’s just me 🙂

We’ve certainly all enjoyed the very mild fall weather this year,  BUT we need some cold weather up here so the Wisp to start making some snow soon !!

The Annual Festival of Trees was held Thanksgiving Weekend with the help of ….a huge success again ! All proceeds to our local abuse center – The Dove Center

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake!

I found this little bit of verse about the season that I thought you might like

“How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.”

We were driving back from a Long & Foster event in Baltimore today, and were treated to this beautiful sunset once we came through Cumberland. Here’s a photo of the tail end of it as we neared Deep Creek Lake…and it brought to mind the old maxim… ‘Red sky tonight, sailor’s delight’  . It’s supposed to be 70 up here tomorrow…may fair winds always fill your sails!

On a final note, this is an opportunity for me to give my thanks to you for being part of my personal and Real Estate life in some way. I appreciate you and wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving with your family and friends !

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

“The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Sequin. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.” (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 5/4/15)

And a fantastic day it is up here at beautiful Deep Creek Lake. The grass is greening, the birds are tweeting, docks are floating, fish are jumping and the cotton is high! Well, no cotton – but the livin’ is easy and the weather is spectacular – forecast is calling for 80 degrees this coming weekend.

I had the pleasure of attending the Spring Concert of the Garrett Community Band at the community college on Sunday. Great concert…the band has really grown and they sounded fantastic. Their next concert is at Broadford Park just prior to the Oakland Fireworks July 3rd. Come out to support our local musicians and you can enjoy the fireworks twice…July 3rd at Broadford, and on the 4th at Deep Creek.

Sprinklers, Fracking & Spring Oh My!

If you are planning on putting the safety toe boots on and start building this year, make sure you have your building permit in place before the end of June 2015. As of July 1, all new construction will be required to have whole house sprinkler systems installed. It is going to be costly. In addition, if your building lot is not located on one of the public water systems, you’ll need to erect a holding tank in place that can maintain pressure over the required sprinkling period…also, very costly. You can check out the Maryland website here:

Talking to Jim Torrington at the GC Building Permits just now….he says that if you’re on a public water system, the mandate doesn’t take effect until January 2016! How much sense does that make?? Jim says that the water pipes(from the public systems) going into the house are ¾” diameter currently. The fire suppression systems require a 1” inflow pipe. This gives a little more time to retrofit, I guess.

Fracking Legislation: This is the synopsis of the activity as of Monday, April 6, 2015, from Paul Durham, our Govt Affairs Director at GC Board of Realtors:

”SB409 is alive on the Senate floor with amendments. This is the companion to HB449 but it was watered down in the senate committee and the health study requirement was removed. It basically creates a moratorium for the next 2 1/2 years on gas drilling and mandates regulations be drafted. IMO a “kick the can” bill that requires the state to do what it was planning anyway. The out date on the moratorium prohibits gas drilling until after October 1, 2017. If passed it will need to cross over to the House. There is a question about how the rules might apply for this since we are past the crossover date, or alternatively HB449 could be amended to match it and then that come to the floor, then crossover. Mind boggling.”  Thank you Paul

Well, the crocus’ are blooming and warm breezes are wafting through through our open windows finally. Here’s a photo of the East Ridge trails at Wisp….still a little snow left to melt off.

Huey’s Ice Cream

Went to the new ice cream shop in town today at Huey’s Ice Cream Parlor next to Bear Creek Trader’s in McHenry. Great tasting Hershey’s Premium products with a smattering of low/no fat alternative sorbets, sherbets, and yogurt. The always lovely Ruth Brown took care of our Long & Foster crew with a smile and great service….and the prices won’t create a cardiac event!! Got to talk some Pirate baseball with Sam Housley, the GM of Hugh’s business, while we were there. Oh, and a big thanks to Hugh Umbel for his generous major sponsorship of Deep Creek’s Fireworks over the 4th of July.

Glorious Autumn Glory

I took a ride out to Thousand Acres at the southern end of Deep Creek Lake last week with a few friends from to check out the new golf course. The front nine is complete and the fall colors enhanced the beautiful layout of this very ‘golfer friendly’ Craig Shreiner design. We had a great round, took a few mulligans, and then wandered down to look at the new level lakefront lots for $625,000(three power boat slips each)that include membership in the golf club. Pretty impressive pricing…you need to take a look!

Hey folks, it’s that special time of the year here in Garrett County when the hardwoods are loaded with color, the hillsides of oaks and maples are just exploding with nature’s palate The 42nd Annual Autumn Glory Festival is happening October 8-11. It’s always a great time, lots of folks from are in town Thursday through Sunday for the Fireman’s Parade and OomPah Festival(Thurs. night) all the way through the huge Grand Feature Parade(Saturday) and antique/craft shows/local food vendors throughout. Throw in a car show, the MD State Fiddle and Banjo Championships, quilt show, and local food vendors and you’ll have a ton of stuff for the whole family to do. Though Oakland is the center of all the fun, jump in the car and you’ll find the Haunted House and Mountain Coaster at the Wisp Resort along with the ‘Great Pumpkin and Hooligan Race’ on Sunday at the ASCI Whitewater Course on top of Wisp. And….there’s a pretty cool corn maze and farm tour at the Bender Farm in Accident. Hope to see you somewhere over this fabulous Garrett County Autumn Glory Weekend….voted MSN #1 Fall Festival!

See you around the Lake,

Doug McClive
